Philosophy Workshop for Year 11 - Student Report
Luke, Year 11, reports on a philosophy workshop held recently as part of the Harris Experience programme.
At the start of the philosopy workshop we were all given a piece of paper with a question on it, all of which were different. We were then asked to speak to our peers to share ideas and gather information and opinions. We then spent a further three hours discussing the question: 'is it better to think bad and not act on it, or not to think bad in the first place?'.
We were able to discuss and debate this question using a variety of examples and analogies. Some of the scenarios were the idea about rewards and rewarding a child who always succeeds compared to a child who tries but is mentally handicapped.
We also discussed if unintentional sexual assault should be charged with the same outcome as someone who intended to commit the same sexual assault crime.
The workshop was a fantastic experience. We all had the opportunity to agree or oppose ideas, bringing in new examples and questioning and re-thinking our own ideas.
Peter, Year 11, said: "During the philosophy debate a lot of good points and ideas were raised and it helped change our thinking and take the views of others into account. I really enjoyed arguing for my points and I was also able to understand the points that others raised - a very good workshop."
