Rainham Union Debating Society - Launch Event
Raihan, Year 11, reports on the first debate of our Rainham Union Debating Society, part of our Rainham Experience programme.
At the debate, we first looked at a range of different items we would take if we were to be stranded on a desert island (such as money, a mobile phone and a camera) and then came to different conclusions of what items should be left behind and what should be taken instead.
For some of the items we were able to easily come to a conclusion of what should be left behind, whilst other items had to be debated to decide what was more important.
As the session progressed, we covered questions such as 'should marijuana be legalised?' and 'should the voting age be brought down to 16?'. From these questions everyone was involved as the classroom was split into different sections: totally agree, agree, neutral, disagree or totally disagree. Here we were able to see the reasons why people decided to go with their decision.
I found it interesting because from the debate we were able to see the different views people had and understand what their reasons were behind their decisions. Furthermore, the debate was engaging as towards the end of the debate, everyone was able to vote for which character from Romeo and Juliet should remain in a hot-air balloon and which characters should be voted out; what this meant was that everyone played a role in the final outcome.
