Rainham Union Debating Society - First Meeting Thurs 5th December
This term, as part of our Rainham Experience programme, we are proud to launch our new debating society.
Named the Rainham Union Society, we invite all students in Years 10 and 11 to attend our first event from 15:30 to 16:30 on Thursday 5th December.
Students will get the opportunity to acquire and develop skills in structured argument, public speaking, and the consideration and use of evidence. Practising these skills will mean participants are better prepared for the most demanding A-levels, the best universities and their future careers.
They will get the chance to identify and draw on rhetorical tools used by figures in public life, from politicians to singers, and see why these are effective.
Moreover, we will look at topics beyong the scope of the GCSE curriculum, topics which will allow our students to think about the bigger picture, our society and the roles we can all play within it.
Our first full debate will be from 15:30 to 16:30 on Thursday 19th December, and our topic will be This House would abolish Christmas.
Future topics in the coming terms will include:
- This House believes that the British media have a race problem; and
- This House would reintroduce corporal punishment.
If you have any questions about the Rainham Union Society, please contact to Mr Phillips.
Note: the Rainham Union Society was originally advertised as House of Rainham but we think the new name is much better!
