Dance Students Stunned by Sadler's Wells' 'Giselle'
Yesterday Ms Griffin-Ahamed and Ms Naylor took fourteen Year 9 and 10 Dance students to see Akram Khan's Giselle at Sadler's Wells Theatre in Angel, London.
Giselle is a contemporary ballet which tells the story of a peasant girl named Giselle, who dies of a broken heart after discovering her lover, Albrecht, is betrothed to another. The Wilis, a group of mystic and supernatural women who dance men to death, summon Giselle from her grave. The score was performed live by the English National Ballet Philharmonic.
Students were able to witness the artistry of ballet and how it has been adapted in contemporary form, to tell the story of Giselle. Students were also able to look at the production techniques of the piece (lighting, costume, set design, staging, music) and how they contribute to the choreographic intention of the piece.
Students were stunned and absolutely loved the piece. The English National Ballet have also organised a workshop for our students in October as well as tickets to watch Giselle at Vue Cinema in January to see how the production is performed for film compared to live; which goes hand in hand with their curriculum and scheme of work for dance.
