Sir Steve Redgrave Presents Award to Rainham Rowers
We were thrilled and proud that Harris Academy Rainham was invited to be one of just five schools chosen to participate in Gloriana Achievers' Day 2018.
Gloriana is Her Majesty The Queen's Row Barge and Gloriana Achievers' Day was developed by Sir Steve Redgrave and The Gloriana Trust to reward schools with the most improved results in the previous academic year.
Harris Rainham was chosen because we achieved one of the biggest increases in our 2017 Progress 8 score when compared to the previous year. It is a great honour for us to have been chosen to take part in this prestigious event and a testament to the hard work of our students and staff.
Overall winning school
80 students from the five invited schools went to the Royal Docks Adventure, Royal Albert Dock, London, on 18th April 2018, where they were welcomed by Sir Steve Redgrave (pictured with our students below), five times Olympic rowing gold medal winner. HAR was represented by Nathan, Daniel, Summer, Lennox, Kieran, Mobolaji, Sadie and Makeda.
The students spent the morning learning how to row and then took part in The Gloriana Achievers’ Regatta where all rowers took part in a time trial . Harris Academy Rainham was the overall winning school and was awarded the splendid ‘Gloriana Achievers’ Blade’ by Sir Steve Redgrave at the presentation ceremony at the end of the day.
Winners of The Gloriana Achievers’ Students from HAR also went on to row ‘Gloriana’ in the Achievers’ Day Flotilla, with all participants receiving a ‘Gloriana Achievers’ Day’ scroll.
Sir Steve Redgrave said, ‘I’m thrilled that we can give so many youngsters the opportunity to get out on the river. I’ll be helping them with some tips on how to get the most out of learning to row, plus of course cheering on the crews as they compete for this fabulous prize.’
It was a wonderful day enjoyed by everyone who attended.
