Formula 1 Summer School - Report and Pictures
Around 70 students from Year 7 and 8 students attended the F1 summer school where they had the opportunity to build an F1 race car, learn about the importance of aerodynamics in F1 racing and race their cars along a track using CO2 propulsion.
Students learned paper-making skills to develop an advanced product, and discovered the importance of quality control and how one minor defect could affect the aerodynamics of the race car.
Students actively engaged in a discussion about the theory of aerodynamics, the use of down force and how air can act as a form of resistance in a race.
Using the new wind test system, we tested our designs and put forward improvements. The final test and consolidation of theory was the racing of the cars to understand how marginal issues with the manufacture of the car will affect the success of the design.
Students developed their science, technology engineering and maths (STEM skills), whilst building confidence and experiencing teamwork and inclusion. It was a fun and inspiring environment where they started to develop an informed view about careers in engineering, Formula 1, science and technology.
